Colonel Hans Landa is the primary antagonist of the 2009 Quentin Tarantino film Inglourous Basterds. He is portrayed by Austrian actor Christoph Waltz.
Standartenfurer (Colonel) Hans Landa is a German SS officer in the Sicherheitzdienst. He is nicknamed "The Jew Hunter" in reference to his keen ability to locate Jews hiding throughout France, and takes a great deal of pride in this reputation and its associated nick-name. He is cruel and ruthless, but charming, courteous, and diabolically intelligent. Besides German, he speaks at least three other languages: English, French and Italian. Despite several loyalty awards in the SS, Landa has no real faith in Nazi ideology or loyalty to the Third Reich; he is driven by ambition alone, and by the end of the film gladly switches sides over to the winning party when opportunity strikes. He even manages to negotiate a hefty deal such as a house on Nantucket Island, his military pension, recognition as being a war hero for working with America and to be awarded the Medal of Honour.
Landa is still punished for his actions by Lt. Aldo Raine, who carves a swastika on his forehead, a trademark he and his men bestow on captured German soldiers whom they choose to spare.
Awards and decorationsEdit
Hans Landa appears to be the recipient of several high awards and decorations of Nazi Germany. He is seen wearing the Blood Order, indicating that he either participated in Hitler's 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, or that he had been a Nazi Party member since no later than 1932; his status as a veteran Nazi is reinforced by the Golden Party Badge, only worn by the first 100,000 NSDAP members, and the Honour of Chevron, indicating Party membership before 1933. On his dinner dress uniform, he is seen wearing the Golden knights cross of the War merit cross with sword, the highest possible grade of this order. It should also be noted that several of his medals are out of place. His Iron Cross First Class is worn below the War Merit Cross and the ribbon of the War Merit Cross Second Class is in worn in lieu of that of the Iron Cross, when, actually, the Iron Cross came before the War Merit Cross in precedence.
